Flea market record vibes

Flea market record vibes
English electro producer Shura

There’s a great Instagram account I recently came across which is almost like a free invite into finding new music without asking the owner to spin some vinyl.

Vinyls Shop is located at a Parisian flea market in Saint Denis and the owner takes great delight in putting on a 12” and getting the record perusers to cut some moves.

The clip which got me following was of some Japanese tourists dancing to Donna Summer’s Bad Girls, a track which is extremely funky.

As is Bobby Blanco’s 3AM, a delectable funky bass-driven house track totally new to me. 1,2,3,4….

The owner spins both funk and house and is worth a follow.

⏺️ What’s new?

Killen - Onanon
A touch of the Fred Again to the entree to this new electronic release from the Swedish producer.

Shura - Recognise
It’s been a few years since I came across English electropop and synth-pop Shura.

She has dropped Recognise, which has a shade of Sinead O’Connor to it.

If you like that, her standout track is Touch from 2016. A remix from Four Tet below…

North London’s Sound of Fractures has musical influences from Massive Attack and the beat line to Don’t Worry testifies to that. Excellent.

In the last issue, we profiled some outstanding recent soundtracks. This and several of the above have formed a tidy start to the latest in the Sussex Sundays series. Take a listen…

RIP Alfredo

Just before Christmas, DJ Alfredo, a DJ whose anything-goes spirit had a huge influence on British club culture, died after having suffered a stroke in 2021.

The Guardian takes up how he became an Ibiza music great.

Born Alfredo Fiorito in Argentina in 1953, he emigrated in 1976 to Paris, then Madrid, then Ibiza, living a casual existence selling candles and clothes while picking up DJ experience at a bar. “A guy I knew who had a club called Amnesia decided to go to Thailand,” he explained to the Guardian, regarding the farmhouse venue. “He gave me the keys and said I was in charge … We opened at 3am and went on until midday, so people would come down after the other clubs shut.”

This Spotify playlist is well worth a listen for a taste of what he would spin.
